Today is World Mental Health Day.
Mental health is woefully neglected in this world. Many countries, like the US, Canada and Great Britain, give lip service to wellness, but access to proper resources still remains difficult.
Did you know that roughly one person commits suicide nearly every 40 seconds? Meaning that by the time you finish reading this blog, someone will have decided – sadly and inaccurately – that their life isn’t worth living.
News Flash: Your life matters. No matter how bleak you feel, your life matters.
Having depression, anxiety, bi polar or any other mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. Because it is exactly that — an illness, and it should be treated with the same respect and attention as any other disease.
Unfortunately, many people are still embarrassed about admitting they have an issue. That’s one of the reasons why I’m so open about having depression. If we’re ever to erase the stigma of mental health problems, those of us who live with them must speak out and normalize the experience. You’d be surprised to know that there are millions of us out there.
So, don’t ever be afraid to say that you’re sad, or that you are feeling anxious. If you are feeling down, speak out. You are not alone. There are many of us battling the same diseases.
And if you are feeling truly hopeless? Please, please, please talk to someone. Because like I said above, your life matters.
