Drop a pebble in the water:
just a splash, and it is gone;
But there’s half-a-hundred ripples
Circling on and on and on….
(James W. Foley 1874-1939)
I’m a big believer in the ripple effect – that like a stone tossed in a pond, one person’s action can build upon itself to have enormous ramifications. These ripples can be negative or positive – it all depends upon the energy you put into this world. Personally, I prefer to try and spread positivism. After all, it’s our job as members of the human race to make this world a better place.
When it comes to spreading positive ripples, I can’t think of a better example than how the romance community comes together every May to help the Brenda Novak Auction for Diabetes Research. Brenda tossed the first pebble in the water ten years ago when she decided to raise funds in honor of her son. Since then, with the help of her fellow romance writers, she’s raised millions of dollars to combat the disease. (The fifth most deadly disease in the United States, by the way.) When I look at the names of authors involved – some of them the biggest names in the business – I am reminded that one person’s actions can indeed make a giant difference.
This year, the authors at the Chocolate Box are helping Brenda raise more funds. We’ve donated items both as a group and as individuals. Throughout the month of May, you can bid on these items – and many other awesome prizes. Things like a brainstorming session with power agent Laura Bradford, a vacation at Nora Roberts’ Boonsboro Inn, a Las Vegas getaway with Sylvia Day, critique specials, web designs, autographed books, and more.
So what is the Chocolate Box donating? Glad you asked.
We’re donating a six month blog membership! The winning bidder will receive SIX weekday blog spots, their name on the bios and cover on the blog carousel! Guest members will have the option to join any group promos or blog events planned. The membership would start the month after the auction winners are announced and put in contact, and extend 12 months, with one weekday blog offered every other month.
Then there are the excellent individual prizes being offered:
Donna Alward is offering up an autographed copy of her upcoming single title THE HOUSE AT BLACKBERRY HILL.
Samantha Hunter donated a set of signed books and a homemade tote bag (and by homemade, I mean, made with her own two hands.)
Liz Fielding is offering a terrific prize that I’m bidding on myself. A Kindle pre-loaded with a set of Liz Fielding titles!
If books aren’t your think, maybe you’d like pajamas? Jackie Braun, who co-owns By Design Apparel, has donated a pair of adorable ROMANCE pajamas.
As for me, I’m going to put my money where my mouth is by paying it forward. I would’t be where I am today without the help of a lot of people. Therefore, I’m auctioning off a three-chapter manuscript accompanied by a year-long mentorship. My hope is that I’ll be able to guide one lucky writer to success between now and next May!
The BRENDA NOVAK AUCTION FOR DIABETES RESEARCH opens Thursday, May 1. Register to bid here. Best of luck to all of you – let’s raise a lot of money, do a lot of good, and win some great prizes.
Whoops! I almost forgot. The Chocolate Box Spring Giveaway is still going on. Meaning you can register to win right now as well.
